2010 having faces only on at right times

when i work on any model in 2010 Maya, its not like any other version.  i have changed settings of the polygons and faces and no improvement.  when i want faces mode, it stays in whole face mode.  if i switch to setting of faces, then the faces are on the whole time....

How do I fix this on my Mac.????

could you repeat the description. All version of maya ive used including 2010 behave the same.

Sounds like you prefs a fubar'd. Try with a clean set of prefs.
