Balloons

Hi,

I'm making an animation with a friend. In our animation a balloon gets popped by a cuckoo. But our problem is we don't know how to get it to pop realisticly. Are there any plugins (preferably free plugins) which may help us out? We've considered the particle system but that would make the exploded pieces look a bit jaggedy, i.e. it would produce more of a shatter effect right?
