Depth Channel With Hardware Rendering

I'm rendering Sprites with the hardware renderer. I checked "Write ZDepth", but the Z-Channel outputs black. The camera settings are correct, too (I think). What can I do?

Yes, Depth Sort is turned on (but thanks, I didn't consider that).... I'm using a Geforce 3

Not all gfx cards can output the z channel!
