Can't move vertices at finer levels in Sub-D

I am unable to move vertices at finer levels in Sub-D. I can't figure what the problem is. I have tried "Cleaning the topology and Collapsing hierarchy", but it is of no help. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?

Well overall if you intend for a board to help you give it atleast a week. However im afraid with that info alone theres not much I can help you with.

Describe what you do. In detail, the computer doent care what you think should work. It only cares on what does work.

I am modeling a human head using sub-d. I started out with a polygon and converted it to sub-d. While in standard mode and level '0' sub-D everything is working fine, but it seems I can't move vertices when I increase the base level to 1 or 2. The gizmo shows up but it won't move. It seems there is a problem with all of the Sub-D and not just with the piece of geometry I am working on presently. I tried with primitive sub-d cube/sphere, and I am facing the same problem. Is there any setting/preference that is causing this?

Do you have a history poly cage connected?

btw rhis wasnt what i asked, im not interested in what you intend to produce. but what you instruct the computer to do.

Sorry my bad. I used modify > convert poly to Sub-D. By history polycage do you mean the the cage we get on toggling between standard and proxy mode? Or the one available in the modify > convert > poly to subD menu? If you are talking about the later, I have tried both options available in "Sub surface mode" namely : Standard(without history) and Proxy object.

oh one thing your computer running on ATI card?

I have an nvidia 8600MGT, 2.1 GHz Dual Core intel processor and 3GB RAM. Oh btw, I am facing this problem only in maya 2011 and not in 2009. In 2009 everything works fine. I have thoroughly checked and matched the settings, but everything seems ok to me. I'll try re-installing, may be it will fix the issue. I'll let you know if this works.

reinstalling does no good, deleting prefs is the key to that.
