Adding Menu Items

How can I add new menu items to the top of the viewport window? This is the menu bar that has "View", "Shading", "Lighting", "Show", "Renderer", "Panels".

I would like to add in an item under "Shading" for each viewport that is open or gets opened, but I don't know which part of MEL or the API will allow me to do this.

Mel, look into the scripts that build the panels. you can find it in

maya/8.5/scripts/createModelPanelMenu.mel

Never edit this file! just copy it to your own scripts directory and edit it there.
