hey soupkitch,
well i think nothing real would NEVER release a version with this kind of image rendering troubles.. because every single function is really optimized. simple rule. Bugs happen to everyone, but breaking the software design rule, no. There was no toy function, just very optimised basic nodes which you had to plug together to make your own.... that was the main concept (as usual in comp softs but even more in shake).
I know many softwares dealing properly with psd :
xsi, dutruc (propriatary french comp software) to name a few (maya doesn't look very stable using psd either ! so you are wright, maybe it's not really easy but, look around , it's possible. if adobe should be working on it then let apple contact them)
Like someone said on this site, the cache has never been working properly under osx. If you want to us shake for film, linux is probably the only way but the price is different (by the way nothing wrong with smoothcam and retiming). I use the pshp plugs like you said but the multilayer feature would be really usefull.
While Nothing real was a revolution -the first highend comp software available commercially-, I don't want anyone to feel insulted but there is (or was) a problem of quality testing with earlier shake versions.
I don't think all this is insulting the great nreal people, i think they do suffer of the loud administrative process of such a huge company, which probably provides in depth beta testing, but maybe not really used to film industry... too bad because they probably have huge dev ressource.
I am sorry to say, but apple fans like to insult everything outisde of their guru (microsoft blabla etc) while both have an awfulll commerial politic : they are very similar... Nothing wrong with criticising a dev company to put some pressure on them. Specially when they have a lot of money and ressource. Why not apple? Remember the great feedback from NR team we had on this site when it was independant company... now it's silent (i guess support is only made by email now). It looks like huge companies are bad at inovation.
Ok i will stop this now, i think the people are very aware of such issues anyway (and are tired of reading this long message)...
Anyway good luck to all the dev teams and see you when you will sell us commercial licenses of your fantastic OS on our PC !!
sorry for the long message
Best regards
