I think what he means is that you must have an input node to gamma correct node before you connect to the material. The way i do this is i just bring a texture in for example drag and drop a file node and then open a file. Then drag the gamma correction node and a material in the work area. At this point you must have 3 nodes, material (blinn, lambert etc), gamma correct and a file texture (for example). Now drag and drop the file node onto the gamma correct node and choose value. Then drag and drop the gamma correct node to the material you got and choose color.
Then double click on the gamma correct node to change the 3 d values. if you want to change the gamma just use the same values on all 3 fields.
That's the way i do it although MR gives an error but renders it...
