we're having some problems importing tiff's from maya into inferno - they seem to crash the system (onyx)...
anyone have any experience with this?

We render all our Maya files as .sgi files for import into our smoke (Octane) and it has always worked really well. We import the sequences across ethernet to the stone.
It could be the case that Flame doesn't support compressed Tif's but I'm not sure. As mentioned just convert themm to targa or SGI those formats should be the most compatible.

Use imgcvt in a shell on the Maya workstation to convert your sequences into SGI sequences. The last 4 versions of Flame supports Maya's IFF format...discreet labels it Maya images in the import menu.
