Insert edge loop tool : no free sliding along the edge

Hello,
I have a problem  with the insert edge loop tool that keeps on creating constrained loops as if the edge i'm sliding on had been divided in five equal parts. Whatever edge i'm sliding on will provides only five stops. I've been searching, resetting, rebooting : can't find my way out of this.
A help would be great. Many Thanx.

You might have it set to multiple edge loops (5), try going to the tool settings and select relative distance from edge or equal distance from edge.

EDIT: Go into vert mode.. you might have deleted edges by just pressing delete instead of using the DELETE EDGE/VERTEX tool. This will be apparent if there's vertices and no edges where you're trying to use the tool. To solve this simply select the vertices you don't want and use the Delete Edge/Vertex tool (Polygons > Edit Mesh > Delete Edge/Vertex)

Thanx Chris,
but the multiplie edge loops was turned off : it does not create five loops, it constrains the sliding in five equal stops along the edge as if it encountered isolated vertices. The same thing happens if I create a brand new shape (cube or whatever) and try the tool on one of its edges... The tool was workin' fine till then, must be somethning I turned on or switched off somewhere.
