"Look through selected" command

Hi list,

I tried to just copy the command that popped up in the scripteditor (echo all commands on) when I chose "Look through selected" from the panels tab, but it seems that there needs to be a different number after the command, in order to get it to work with different laayout-configurations.

I wonder if there is something to query in order to get the right number for the layout. Then I could store that in a variable, and let the "Look through selected" command affect that variable.
If there is a easier way to get to look through the selected object, without needing to use a pulldown menu, I would be glad to know.

I also wonder if there exsists a script or even hotkey (could not find one) that lets you easily choose a camera (that is created), and look through it.

the lookthru command needs to have the name of the viewport that you want to to change. getting this info is reasonably easy...

to get the name of the panel, you need to use the getPanel command. you can setup a script something like this:

$currentPanel = getPanel -underPointer;
lookThru $currentPanel cameraShape1;

This is an example of what I get in the script editor (echo all commands on) when I do a Look Through Selected from the panel pulldown, and have a camera selected:

lookThroughSelected modelPanel4;
editMenuUpdate MayaWindow|mainEditMenu;

Its the number after mode1Pane that changes, in this example its 14 (or maybe its mode1Pane1 and 4 is the variable?), but how du I get this number or the whole mode1pane1, so I can store it in the $currentPane1?

ok, well if you want to do a look through selected, then use the lookThroughSelected command instead of lookThru. Its a pretty simple script change.

bind this to a hotkey:
$currentPanel = getPanel -underPointer;
lookThroughSelected $currentPanel;

so you bound that script to a htkey and you get errors??? weird... because thats exactly what I have in my hotkey editor, and it works fine...

try putting the word string in front of the $currentPanel variable. just make sure you only have a single semi-colon after each line too...

Thanks again, Im doing exactly what you say, but do only get this message in the feedback line: Error: Cannot cast data of type string[] to string.

you could try putting braces around the code. ie, use the { at the start, and } at the end.

if that doesn't work, try changing the name of the variable. if you have previously run code from the command line with the same variable name, but different data type, it will screw up like that. apart from that, I really don't know why thats happening...

Thanks again, I dont mean to bother you, but are you sure that the getPanel -underPointer is the adequate command?

Now I get: Error: Cannot use data of type no type in a scalar operation.

And if I try to print the result of $currentPanel, it only says "getPanel -underPointer";

Its very strange, if you say it works for you it should work here to.

I also tried to change the -underPointer to -withFocus, since I think that is more appropriate when testing the script from the scripteditor, but nothing helps. Hmm...

uumm, that error sounds like you're doing something pretty weird in your code dude... try taking like a screenshot of what you've got on your screen... maybe that'll help me debug whats going on.

Thanks for your persistence, I have no screencap at the mo, but in addition to trying everything, I just grabbed your text from a post above and pasted it in my scripteditor, and also saved it as a user-hotkey.

$currentPanel = getPanel -underPointer;
lookThroughSelected $currentPanel;

Neither did work, I also tried the -withFocus cmd instead of the -underPointer.

Everything else I try that also is related to panels, also seems to encounter the same probl. I have tried two different machines, but each running Maya 4.1.
