Maya hair is probably not a good solution, it can work for hairs, but it is nothing else than paint effect.
It is between maya fur and shave you have to choose.
both can give nice results, the problem of maya fur is to apply it on a complex polygonal model. In fat in never had a good thing, because of the uv map border, i still try to find a way because some people do it. fur is easy to use after that and faster to render.
Shave is more easy to apply because it is using normals in place of uvs, but it is more complicated to parameter and heavy to compute.
I am not a specialist on that but i have tested both and it should be great if they could melt in one ![]()
both can do great things and in my tests i would perfer using maya fur if i can find a way to deal with this f... uvs ![]()
