new to 3dsmax

i'm incredibly new to the world of 3d. i got 3dsmax about a year ago and made a couple simple models and then stopped. but just recently i got r4 and FINALLY figured out how to integrate meshsmooth effectively into a high poly model. (stupid line visibilities) so anyways, i've been working on this current model for a couple days now. yeah, i know, it's just a mesh at this point, but i'm still pretty proud of it.

i think in it's current incarnation it has around 1200 faces on the low poly version. then i give it 3 meshsmooth iterations when it renders.

i'm still finishing it off, but when it's done, i do intend to add some bones and animate it. w00t. go me and my crappy computer. i hope it can handle it.

k, so uh. no replies. perhaps people got to the page, so the early pictures and decided to stop. ok. i can take a hint. here are some current pics that i just took. i haven't started on the legs yet, so they're just the torso.

i've been experimenting with lights a little for fun. and everyonce in a while i add bones to the arms, cuz eventually i want to animate this. yeah. that'll be fun.

i would really like some crits. is this a field i should pursue? or should i stop now.

You are a terrific artist. I am also an artist purely for hobby. I rarely draw anymore. I do 3d as a hobby because I am fasinated by it and it is another form of art to me somewhat like sculptihg with free clay

The torso of this model looks wonderful cause the countours are correct and because your art background gives you good sense of proportion. Really nice job, not just for a beginner, for anyone!

I am not in the industry, but I could definetely say that your drawing background gives you a good start for modelling and would for sure help you land a job say over someone wit similiar experience but no art experience. I think it would be hard as hell to find a modelling position, this is my opinion, like I said, Im not in the industry.

Keep going man, I want to see what you can do!!

thanks. yeah, this was all done by manipulating vertices. i know there's a name for that kind of modeling, but i can't quite remember what it is.

How did you get that rendered man in wireframe ? is it a wire texture or something ? Teach me obi-wan ... your padawan is listening

two ways you can get that effect in 3dsmax. when in the material editor there are a couple checkboxes, like faceted, face-map, 2-sided, and wireframe. and they effect how the model looks in the viewscreen when editing and you have smooth and highlights selected.

the other way, is to force wireframe when rendering. it's in the MAX default scanline A-buffer section. in options. those are the only two ways i've seen.
