New tyan tiger MPX opinions?

well I need lan, scsi (for my scanner and cdrw) dxr2 decoder card, SBlive, modem, I was hoping for an aditional slot for video capture devices, or new technology...

your not going to find a mother board that has agp on it with more than 6 pci slots. So you should stop looking for that feature. Onboard scsi, though convenient can be a hassle down the road if you have problems past warrenty date or if you just decide to switch motherboards again soon and have to fork out another hunk of money to replace it. with 5 or 6 pci slots you should be able to fill your need for most i/0 solutions.

slot 4===1394,analogue capture solution card( dv500 or something)

wanted to recycle my stuff, Need 6 as far as I know, and the new TYan does have 6 but tyan seems to suck right now.
1) sound Blaster Live
2) lan
3)dxr2 decoder card for DVD
4)video capture card
5)scsi
6)modem or future technology.

Any clue?

You probably won't need the dxr2 decoder anymore; since most video cards like the geforce2 and 3 and of course the 4 will all decode DVD in hardware. Not that you couldn't do it in software, since all it takes to do it fast is a 400mhz or faster CPU. So theres a free slot there. The modem; you can get a USB modem or an external modem for relatively cheap ammounts of money; and since PCI modems tend to die quick;you'll be apt to make that purchase before any new technology comes out.
As far as new technology that does come out; your more likely to replace an existing device; like a sound or video card; than you are to add a whole new one. An example might be firewire. But thats not really new.

Hey! you sound lieka smart guy, cold you tell me if the MSI k7d master can support the new 1900+ mpx chips? I can't seemt to tell since AMD just mentions the asus? ya, unless your still using a cpu less than 500mhz you dont need a hardware dvd decoder. Leaving this out gives up a free slot. Modem doesnt need to take up a pci slot either. Tyan doesnt suck the just dont have a mother board that is currently appealing to you right now. hehe

no, I've looked at many review boards and the tyan seem to suck, they do have a board that is VERY appealing, the tunder k7 is very sweet, scsi, and lan onboard gives me many free slots... I do need the dxr2 decoder card since it has the rca and s cable outbut to my tv, how would I do it otherwise? I jsut found that the Dual MSI board master -l has lan, that will free up a slot for me sice it cames with a usb 2 board. I think that should be the newest tech anyway... than kfor you help I really do apreaciate it, this has been giving me a headache for months!

I have a Tyan Tiger and a Tyan Thunder both of which have worked for me flawlessly.

It is my understanding that some of the early Tiger boards had some problems and have been getting a bad rap ever since.

I don't use anything USB so I wouldn't know how they handle that.

well, based on curent research I think I'll go with the MSI k7d master-l, this board has very good reviews and has built in LAN, Many poeple have had complaints about tyan and there MOBOs, but I don't want to chance it and waste money of a crappy board... I wanted to get eh tyan thunder with the built on scsi and lan, and it looked liek the board to get, but I dunno if it handles the new 1900+ mp chips and I would require to get a speacil power supply and such. It jsut doent' sound like the bvest investment. THanks anyway...

FYI it's only boards with SCSI built in that require the Beefed up PS which you'd want if you were planning to shove a bunch of SCSI hardrives in the case with it.

According to the article it should sell for $200 which sounds like a good deal.. I could not find a price online.

It is important to get good and correct information.. personally I think the rumormill has taken a disliking to Tyan and unfairly so. But if you can get the features you want for less then go for it.

Generally speaking if you want SCSI you'll pay more.

Also This board isn't even listed on the MSI site http://www.msi.com.tw so who knows when it will be availabe???

Keep in mind that to my knowledge both of these "NEW" boards reviewed on Tom's are just that extremely new.. whereas the Tyan boards have been out for awhile. I would expect there to be some glitches in the these companies first attempts at a Dual MP board but then maybe not.

Also according to the article they tested both boards with 1900+ MP chips.

As I appreaciate your advice I did check with more than one board on this subect, I was plannig on the tyan thunder k7 (s2462ung) but I'm still not convinced, I wastedt o get the elsa DCC and some scsi drives I wanted a really kick ass sytem for maya and such... don't even mention wildcat II, I dont' wanna sepend THAT much money... Also, know where I can get a great looking and functioning casing for an AMD system?

s2462ung is the system that I got and as I mentioned it has been great for me! I've been putting all my systems in rackmount cases.

What you want is an ATX case .. they are not cases specific to AMD. If you plan on putting alot of drives and such then you should consider a full tower case.. avoid cases that are made out of plastic as they do not conduct heat well.

Also when it comes to buying your Motherbaord, CPU's and RAM buy it all from one source.. one that will install these components and guareentee the work. Otherwise if you get them from different vendors you'll have no guarentee that the parts work together. This is very important and the main reason why I trust and reccomend www.micropro.com

Gmask; I've had 3 bad experiences with tyan boards; and on all 3 occasions tyan support brushed me off; and I'd been a very good customer surrendering any and all information that they'd need. Hence I hold a grudge against them. Asus support isn't all that; but their hardware is pretty much geared towards working with everybodys hardware. They're ussually pretty darn solid too. I just got an MSI board; not the dual AMD; but still an MSI onna new chipset (the nforce420d) for my gaming rig; tossed my workstation drive in it for the hell of it. after a reinstall of windows everytihng worked flawlessly.
As far as needing TV out for DVD; just about every card with an nvidia hcipset on it has svideo out; and comes with an svideo to RCA adapter.
Definately I'd say get the beefy power supply though; especially if your loading up your case with SCSI drives and fans. Liam Li cases are nice because they're very moduler.. but then again they cost a fortune..

Sorry to hear that I have two and they have been great! So go figure ? Like I've been saying if you bought the boards , CPU's and RAM from different places there's no telling what may happen.. especially with ram.. Cheap ram is usually suspect and often flawed. I'll only ever use ECC ram from now on. Also I don't readily trust any manufacturer's support except seagate beacuse they will send you a new or refurb drive no questions asked in most cases. ..I'd rather get it from the place I bought the equipment from because they are usually more helpful and cooperative.. I hope you never need to get support from Promise Inc. they suck. or it was that I was trying to use their card in a computer that was just plain too old.. it worked for awhile and then didn't???

Anyway I wouldn't be so persistant about reccomending Tyan and micropro.com if I weren't convinced that it's a trustworthy and reliable source.. other folks I've reccomended to them have only had good experiences.

I have a Tiger board and it has run great. However yes Tyan technical support is absolutely worthless and they don't even have a toll free number.

The only problem I found was that Tyan boards are picky on memory and want high quality memory. Once I but high quality memory in my machine it worked fine. (The reason i didn't have that in to start is the company shipped me the wrong brand and i didn't look at the chips - just popped them in).

I'd concure w/ the recommendations to do as little "on-board" as possible for the motherboard.
