MySQL is popular in that it tends to be paired frequently with PHP-based web applications. It has a lot of acceptance on the Linux platform but works with Windows also. MySQL.com should have lots more info in that regard.
Some might position MySQL as a mid-to low-end database due to performance and security issues, but I can't argue with the progress the PHP army has made into areas occupied by traditionally high-end apps, like portals, content management apps, and so on. Many databases employ "SEQUEL" and some formats still in use today date back to the 70s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL
Since this is highend.com, I thought I'd mention some other less popular but potentially higher-end databases such as IBM DB2, Oracle, Rational, and PostgresSQL. They tend to be used with Java applications. Enterprise IT work is about as exciting as a yellowed chemistry manual but it's good for paying the bills, good luck.
