Can Softimage 3d be installed on any file system or does it have to be on like fat32,I use Windows nt 4.0 sp 5.

It does not matter. If NT can read it, Softimage can be installed on it. You can even run it off a remote drive if you want to.

Try and get service pack 6a, the latest service pack is always the better.

Correction! the latest service pack is NOT always the better. SP4 and SP6 both introduce regressive behaviour from their predecessor. SP6 also has networking issues with mental ray.

SP5 works best if you're using NT.

we use service pack 6a and we have no issues networking with mental ray?
Has SP6a fixed the mental ray bug?

No I dont use a network,I think sp6 fixed that bug.

SP6 was the 'cause' of that bug. You can try SP6a, but SP5 has been proven to work. Some of the tools at SI's support website come with disclaimers against use with SP6. Whether you're physically on a network or not makes no difference as the licensing works over the same protocols - that's where some of the issues are.

If it were my machine, I'd either upgrade to Windows 2000 w SP1 or move back down to NT SP5.

Your right, it makes no difference if your on a network or not because of licensing, been using 3Dmax for to long. Duh.
