Rigging a tie/rope

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to rig a tie or rope. I need to make a rig for a tie and then animate the tie tying itself... I think the animation would come easy once I have the right rig. But as an animator, I don't know what type of rig I need or how to make it.

At first I tried rigging the tie like you would rig a character's spine. But animating the making of the knot with that rig was a headache.

Does anyone know what would be a good approach for this rig? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Huh. Good question. The main problem I've had with similar things is that rigging tends to fall apart when you make the parts squeeze really close together like that. You get all kinds of wierd interpenetration errors. I'm going to try fooling around with this for a bit and get back to you.
