Streamlining Soft

I have a 1.2 gig AMD thunderbird processor and 512mb ram, w/a large harddrive, and soft (3.8 running on win2k) is slow and sometimes Freezes completely. It may not be soft causing the problem, because the computer sometimes crashes, but is there anyway to speed soft up?

Ps. I have gotten a demo of xsi, and it is ALOT slower than soft 3d. Is xsi really that much slower, or is it just the demo?
