The Edge Tool in Maya 2011

I'm looking for help in understanding the Edge tool in Maya 2011.  When selecting objects Edges in Maya I get the following problem.  I have instead a screen shot of the problem that I'm experiencing.  Every time that I use the Hotbox to select the Edges I can't get Maya to just high lite the Edges in the brown color.  It keeps selecting the whole selection in yellow.  Thanks if anyone can give me assistances.

I think you've activated the soft selection mod. If that so, press B will disable it and remove this yellow color.
