Only shape nodes but only if they fall under a certain naming structure first. So it only chnages things if they have the name tat matches the change. If you give teh shape a name like fooBar it nolonger autorenames them. But if you give a name like
pointLightHurraah to a transform thats name is pointLight. It does since it substitutes whatever your name was before to what it is after
Thing is its best not to keep shape names around when dealing with maya or you will be in trouble keep set names instead.
