Thumbnails & Meta tagging for Maya

Not sure if this has been discussed or covered before but I was wondering if there is a way to create thumbnails and or metaa tag data for .MB and . MA files for easier searching. We have tons of maya files and it tends to be a painful process to search thru all of them to see if the mb file is what we need. If there was a way to have a thumbnail saved in or with the maya file so that you can view a snap shot of the active viewport when the file was saved it would be a huge help for searching maya files. A bonus would be to be able to attach meta tag data to maya files that would be saved within the .MB file so it could be used in databases and what not. Something like how you can tag images, music, etc...adding information regarding what the file is.

Is this even possible for Maya 2010??? Has anyone had luck doing something along these lines??? If so any help, advice, or links would be very much appreciated.

There is a shell extension for showing the same thumbnails you can save into visor to show up in the windows exporer.

The visor is mayas native file browzser and whenever you have a file on disk you want a thumbnail for just rendre a image out, choose grab shawch for visor and mmb drag it onto the file in visor.

You can add your own keyword/value pairs with fileInfo;

example:

fileInfo "completed" date;
fileInfo -q "completed";

this info is saved in the file header.

Thanks guys for the help. I didnt know if there was a mel script out there that may attach meta data to a .mb file so Maya files could be searched, viewed, and organized better. I'll keep digging around. If you hear or see anything close to this please let me know.
