Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could suggest the best way for me to exclude a surface from a light.

I've currently got one mesh of a TV, It was suggested that I make it one mesh for deformations that will be applied to it. Inside the TV Im placing a light with FOG on it, which should shine out from the screen area.

I know that if I had the screen as a seperate object I could use light linking to exclude the screen and only include the TV case, then when the box squashed and stretched the lights shape would be altered depending on the size of the screen area.

I hope this makes sense, I've attached an image of the TV. I've already sorted out a way of getting a glow from the TV screen that animates in relation to a movie sequence.

so why not just separate tube from body?

I did originally have it seperated, but I was advised by a couple of riggers that the geometry should be combined if it's going to go through so heavy deformations. Im just looking into different possibilities to see what turns out the best.

I had seperated it and it did deform ok when I used non linear deformers, but If i tried to do it with bones the whole thing would need combining or the screen would pull away unless i did some phenomenal weighting i expect.

Hi, Im may not even need to use a light with fog on , I've managed to get this together to see if it worked properly with my After Effects sequence and I think the glow could be enough.

Naah the riffers are just trying to move their workload over to you. All indirect binding would work fine if separated aswell as all other just as loong as you put the weight identical to the sams botrh sides (trust me its not a big deal). Its one of theose things that a rigger would say as it just makes his life 5 minutes shorter.

Anyway maya can shade trabsparency in shadowmaps so its doable even without breaking appart.
