Um did anyone see what A|W has about the Geforce 3

I was browsing through A|W's ever stupid site today and I found the qualification charts for Maya 4.

Check out what they have to say about the nVidia Geforce cards. I was quite surprised!

Any input? I heard you need revision 5 or better to receive good performance.

gf3 "as is" is bad...but with softquadro dcc is better than fire gl2 ?!?!
uauuu!!! now l go to buy an elsa gladiac 920 and i'll turn it in a dcc! ...cheaper&faster...

where can i get the softquadro patch for geForce2MX under win2000? I tryied to patch them with a softquadro patch a friend gave me but it patches the win98/ME drivers only...

i'm sure there's some accurate info for some cards on that page, but some of the stuff is bullshit and/or outdated.

i think this is pretty slack of A|W.

for instance with Maya3 it has the VX1 with a really old driver version... i'm using the much more recent 0559 driver with my VX1 and its the best its ever been.

yeah RE the GeForce i heard the same thing RE revision five, never used one myself so can't comment beyond that.....

you people crack me up -
3d cards and drivers come out/get updated all the time -

I'm sure that keeping this qual. chart up to date is not at the top of the priority list at AW right now.

-and what if it was?

You people would still try every possible hack/crack/fix imagineable -just to say "look what I figured out - I'm so smart, and you're not......."

-sometimes companies do try to pull a "fast one" on us like charging more for Quadro vs. "regular" GF chipsets, etc.

but these days, rememeber - you are getting this technology for so cheap anyways.........don't complain. -especially when your "patch" doesn't work for you like it did for somebody else. remember, it's still a "hack" -and that's why it's not officially certified.

on a slightly different note, I thought maya4 was not going to use hardware overlay planes so that ge-force based graphics cards wouldnt have a problem and so that machines such as sgi's own octane2 would be able to run maya better.. looking at the qualification chart this would seem not to be the case, though the 'workstation' nvidia based cards appear not to have a problem. I thought that all the ge-force did not support h/w overlays... I am confused??

ok i think you guys are reading the quality chart wrong
what the chart is saying is that theres alot of companies making ALOT of boards based on the geforce cards and A|W can not possible compare each and everyone with maya
now what they are saying how ever is they know the exact board layout of the Quadro boards as only one company makes them and they can test them with maya

yes yes 90% of the geforce boards are the same but some comapnies do make slight changes and do make changes to the drivers so while your elsa card runs maya fine some one elses say creative geforce bad runs maya with lots of problems
they arent saying dont use the geforce 3 they are saying well damn we dont know if all these companies are really making he boardds all the same so we have no idea if ALL of them will work

the hardware overlay plane requirement has been writen-out of Maya 4 -

Geforce technology should be fine for brush tools and paint fx.

It sounds like they're trying to help the sales of the "workstation" nVidia cards. While I have no problem with this in theory, I do have a problem with being misleading about Maya's performance with the regular GF2/3's. They could tout the advantages of the Quadro based cards without implying that GF2/3 cards won't work at all (which is basically what they're doing.)

I find it diturbing that some of the people in power feel the need to downplay the performance of GF2/3 cards. It always feels like they don't want people to know how well these cards work just because they're not expensive enough. Why not just admit how powerful these "cheaper" cards are and sell a ton of them?

Well, Iam using Asus V8200 GF3 Deluxe (det.1290, softQuadro) with Maya 4, win2k for a month now, 10 hrs a day with no problems, ITS GREAT!!!

Hey there! at work we had replaced 2 3dlab pro cards that had some problems with some really cheap Asus V8200 GF3 pures. More for testing games and as temp replacements but wow they smoke in maya and everything else!. I have not seen anyover lay issues at all and no crashes or vannishing lines or anyother problems attributed to non procards. Only levels of interactivity that I have not seen(outside of the wildcat 42xxx) shortly after our modelers and me (animation, texture artist) have been messing with the workstation with the gforce3 in it 3 of us have already gone and baught this card for our home workstations. haha I sold my old card and baught a bunch of stuff (encluding the gforce 3)

I wouldnt bother arguing with anyone over the quality (believeme we have been arguing while hands on with the comparisons using 3d software and various cards) The bottom line is weather or not you have the buget for what A|W calls a pro card or not. In the past things like this were no brainners. You found the money and tried to get all your system specs up. This is a new playing field that those rules (you had no alternatives) no longer hold anyone hostage. You can today buy a geforce 3 and 1.5 gigs of ram for less than the cost of most cards that are considerd to be proffessional. haha.

I personaly welcome these cards. I dont play games but I baught the card because it is faster for what I do and costs me next to nothing. period. I didnt even mess with it by adding the said det.1290.... the card is fast enoough as is.

I am curious though, what does the det.1290 softquadro do? I am using win 2000
