24p Or 60i For Slow Motion?

Hi people,

I have the Shake 4 demo and I'm wondering if the smoothest slow motion would be achieved by shooting DV footage in 60i. That way Shake would have more frames to work with.

Or would Shake handle 24p just as smoothly?

Well, here's the thing. Thing being my opinion...

24 frames a sec isn't a ton less than 29.97 frames a sec.

That said, I prefer working in Shake in "p" (progressive). If you do "i" (interlaced) you need to set your "Inc" (lower right corner of your workspace) to .5. This will allow you to step thru on a "field by field" basis. Which seems to take longer and make work a bit more difficult.

Also remember that Shake does a pretty darn good job of deinterlacing. You'll find that under "Timing" I think. And a lot of Shake's cool stuff (like camera stabilize) only work if the footage is deinterlaced.

Have fun with the retiming/optical flow stuff. It's AWESOME.

So do you think if I shoot standard def DV in 24p, will Shake make really smooth slow motion out of it? And will it be sharp? I'm assuming so, but I just had to ask.

It'll look a lot better then the slo mo from your Final Cut Pro, for sure. But of course it's not gonna be totally sharp.

I've had good luck slowinig down HD footage, but there's a ton more pixels to work with there.

As always, a lotta testing is good.
