Point clouds are the data stored by laser scanners recording 3d point co-ordinates of the surface being scanned.
does anybody know the point cloud file format...i've seen them as simple TXT files listing each point's co-ordinate's.
However i'm not sure if there is a particular order to save them, IE points sharing a common plane are listed together.
Also are there any scripts or decent plugins for 3dsmax to generate the surface of a point cloud? Google suggests they are available for rhino. I've used a standalone soft called PointCloud but it crashes constantly.
Does any clever dude know how the hell the surface is rebuilt? Mind boggling!
I'm interested because I'd like to create the surface of an animated character, that's forever evolving and Blobmesh gives really crap results...even after tidying it up with various stack operations.
I'd like to write a script which can scan my objects in 3dsmax, and create point clouds, to be surfaced.
Sounds mad but i cant think of any other way to get a better results than blobmesh.
Any ideas welcome!
