3DS Max 9.0 Vray 1.5 - Flickering Problem
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Me and my team are quite new to 3dsmax as well as Vray, but the past 3 months we've read enough forums and articles to understand the basic works of this program and render plugin.
Our project ;
Model a car (interior & exterior) in Maya 7.0 and later import into 3dsmax 9.0 using vray materials and Vray GI for rendering. Camera Fly through for exterior and interior in a 30 second clip PAL format.
And then we came upon this flickering problem which for the past 3 weeks we been trying to solve without much sucess.
Flickering problem occurs during the interior flythrough, using HDRI as the GI environment mapping and a few Vray Incandesence Shader for interior lighting. The flickering mainly happens on small objects with textures such as the radio buttons.
Here are 4 rendered frames at 300 x 240 (half size PAL format) ;
Vray 1.5 Render Settings :
Irradiance Map (primary)
Min max rate ~ (-4, -1)
HSph Subdivs ~ 85 (reason; to reduce the noise and lower interp samples)
Interp. Samples ~ 40
Clr Threshold ~ 0.3
Nrm Threshold ~ 0.1
Dist Throshold ~ 0.5
Detail enhancement ~ off
Delone Triagulation with Density Based
Calc pass interp samples ~ 10
From File ~ Saved IRmap using Incremental Add at 150x120 res (-3,0)
QMC (secondary)
Secondary Bounces ~ 10
rQMC Sampler
Adaptive amount ~ 0.2
Noise Threshold ~ 0.001
Time Independent ~ on
Min Samples ~ 16
GSubdivs Multiplier ~ 1.0
So there's the setting we used, we've tried different render engines as well such as IR with Light cache but the best result so far is still by using IR and QMC. Tried it using Single frame mode, incremental and currently From file as well, all of which did not really reduce the flickering problem.
The one thing that did reduce the flickering slightly was by increasing the HSph Subdivs and decreasing the Interp Samples, unfortunately so did the the rendering time...
We still don't understand where and what is causing the flickering problem.
Is the flickering caused by the vray material assigned? The texture?
Or is it due to the low samples and sample interpolation? The randomized Samples option?
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
