HEy I don't know if you already started in any software, But I would suggest to start learning the basics of modeling in 3dmax. Once you know how to model a least hard surface stuff like (desks, chairs, hard edge in general...etc) continue with organic (characters and such) and if you really wnat to get more detailed models. Like for photoreal render for organic shapes use Zbrush.
FIrst get a model right and then you worry about the textures...they will come together with the lighting and rendering...so do your research and know exactly what you want to really work on..
