In Maya, how does one move or rotate just the device pointer - indepent from the geometry. Thanks
device pointer? you mean pivot? To move hit insert.
or keep "d" down, and no it cant be rotated tough the context can!
yes, this works for the move tool, but not the rotate tool. Still am unable to adjust the pivot to rotate at an angle i manipulate. thnx

You can adjust the point but not angle , it owrks exactly like the move menipulator.
Theres a trick to this however, the rotate manipulator has 4 handles and a click anywhere gimbal, the 4 yellow one is alligned to the camera so if you want to turn along vector XYZ by 30 degrees move camera to look up along that vector and turn the green handle.
Ok Now due to the nature of rotation, it gets a bit tricky when your in any other mode than local rotations. Infact unless you use quarteronion interpolation on the curves (which is assure you dont if you dont know what it is, and have explicitly set them on), doing manipulation in any other mode than GIMBAL (doubleclick on tool options) is going to make yoru animation life a living hell one day sooner or later.
