youd better not get tengledin te Nurbs s polys stuff. Alot of people use poly exclusively becaue honestly they dont know how to use nurbs. Personaly i use nurbs as apolymodelling toolset as well as standalone.
Hwever please do understand thet allmost 100% of all mechanileingeneering is done in NURBS! So saying polys are better for this is like saying fish are beter on bicycles. Offcourse machanical eingeneers ue solid modellers, but he reason they sue nurbs as opposed to polys si tt if they boolean tey gt the exact boolean and no halfhearted allmostround. Howvere theese apps are optimied diefferently.
Its good to udertasnd tht theres a big divide between 2 groups of modellers
- Entertaimaent and visualisation modelers
- Eingeneering and industrial designers
for one the eingenereing visualizers are interested in functional forms while the ID is interested in c2 coninuity of the surface (car designers allost all concerete 50% of their efforts here, if you don know what c2 coninuity is then you have allmost no chance to become one, even thenonly about 1 in 10 designer ever msters this well enough) amongst other things
the only real disadvanages ofnurbs are its unintuitiviness (bacuse you do patches not objects), and slightly heavy math. ON the otherand polys prblems are lck of noccsery tools and precicion.
