AE, avi file with Mp3 audio

well in posting things on the web i like to compress them as much as possible

for now what ive ben doing is compressing the visuals in AE using a divx codec and then bringing that file into virtual dub so i could add the audio as an mp3

AE wont let me do this i dont know why but my format options for audio are always grayed out

is there a plug in or something that needs to be turned on so that i can output an AVI directly from AE that compresses the audio into MP3 format instead of wav even when i give AE an mp3 to start with it turns it into wav format inside the AVI

and this causes movie files to be huge
were talking a difference of 20 - 30 megs easily
avi with wav format 35 megs or so for 3 minutes
avi with mp3 format about 9 - 12 megs for 3 minutes

ok..what kind of format of an AVI can even have mp3 instead of .wav based audio ?
whats an example of this ?What codec ?
i didnt think it worked this way.

go download my demo reel in the critique section its a MS Mpeg 4 fast motion based codec encoded as an AVI with the audio saved as an mp3 in the audio file its 2 minutes 5 seconds long at 720 x 486 res and its only like 9 megs big
with sound

ok ok let me explain it again

i want to take a sound file

put it into an .avi instead of it being saved in that avi as a wav file it would be saved in that avi as a mp3 file

like i said i can do with with virtual dub and it cuts file sizes down BIG TIME

i would find it much easier to do this in after effects then using 2 apps
