i dont know specific of shot witch you want to make, but from my expirience:
Using cloth, softbody or ncloth is nice and some times can give you a nice effect, but because it is an simulation, you don't have control on many aspects of animation. Any thing can happen
like you know already.
In ribbon case i prefere no simulated animation made base on n/l deformers like sine, wave or band.
Simple setup looks like this:
- you make your robbon (poly or something) as a flat plane (or something)
- attach deformers sine, wave and band to your ribbon (all wich 0 effect)
- make your motion path and Attach you ribbon to motion path and after make flow path witch lattice around object.
- Go to lattice node (probably ffd1 node) and Outside Lattice switch to ALL.
now, you have object witch fallow your path and animating sine, wave and bend deformer you can make really nice animation in the way like you wish.
You can of course use different types of deformers, but important is to make them in history before Attach to motion Path and Flow Path.
