Antialiasing

Hi All,

Hope someone can shed light on this?!

I have DV PAL Anamorphic footage from a 3D render which is fine but when viewed in Shake seems to loose all anti aliasing causing jagged edges. and when I view it at 1.42 aspect ratio (the ratio that it's gonna be broadcast at) it even more jagged.

I've looked through the manual and I have found the anti alais in the Convert panel but seem t do very little.

To make things worse when i view the footage in AE it looks fine.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

are you sure that it's aliasing and not just general blockiness?
because there's a bug in quicktime that if you dont check "use high-quality playback if available" it will display poorly in some applications (i experienced it with DVD SP).

might be worth a try.

Hi,

Even its challenging me for the past 4.5 yrs.

1) if you put ur pixel aspect to 1 it will look fine. if you put ur required aspect ratio like .9, 1.2, 1.066, 1.422 it gives the a slight antialising issue when viewed in our computer monitor. we have been sending like this only but in the broadcast it was never been a issue, so far we have done 3000 mins of output so nothing to worry about it.....

2) another issue is even if you are using pixel aspect ratio 1, when you click fit mode in ur viewer u can see the jagged edge around all the edges, then if you press home in the viewer it will look good. some times we may forget to click home before showing it to the client or big bosses.

well, obviously if you're not watching your footage in a 1:1 magnification and ratio it will look jagged. it's for the very simple reason that the screen has a certain dot siz and spacing and if you force an app to redistribute the pixels to an odd value they wont "fit" anymore.

an easy way to think of this is take a typewriter and type:

xxx
xxxx
xxxxx

now try to scale it by a factor of 1.2 (ie. make the last line 6 chars wide)

xxxxxx

aint gonna work, unless you do artficial aliasing which would be slower, softer and less precise.
