There is also a mel script that will make a copy of a selected piece of geo and keyframe it's vertices.. although it may be better if actually made blendshapes for each frame.. although I don't know if there is a script for that.
edit -> bake simulation then just say that it takes shapes in account too... to make it a blendshape just take a animated snapshot and blend then to consecutive blend (you may want to mute the transform of the main joint).
Anyway in maya 8.5 youd better use the disk cache its faster than havig a gizillion keys
