Yes python is compatible directly (as long as the interfaces dot change, and they dont really change thet fast). Offocurse it comes with source.
But even here there might be a problem if they ship byte codes to you!
3 years is WAY too loong in computer business. And come on so you and you should be able to sell software you don't maintain every year?!?

What's the problem that max users have?
Max is designed in this way backwards compatible, bu they have a huge problem in modernizing it because the backwards compatibility drags along ALOT of extra stuff that needs to be supported. Causing max to waste a lot of memory along with giving sb par performance at times. But ist alos HELL for developers because the devkit is also not revisited as a whole, so its not maintained in cycles like maya is.
Now even worse because they've been static so long users cant be forced to update. So now theres have a huge hassle of plugs they depend upon that no one has maintained for 3 years. But unfortunately the original makers of the code are already long gone, and sunce tnere was no 6 months review its comes buy surprise.
Mayas about 2-4 years backwards compatible already, all you need is to recompile. Now this has the added benefit for you as plug in user. That means your plugs are revisited each maya version which keeps them cleaner in turn.
it took me 6 hours to recompile all my plugs, 1 day to download my maintenance 3rd party plugs. And 1 day to fix one plug that was 3 years old that needed to be updated from a function that was deprecated already in 7.
But this policy is much to matter very much what maya is about mel and scripting is also not compatible 3 years into future.
PS. don't buy software buy maintenance!
PPS. even im anx ist not 100% reliable so you still need to run the tests. So it does not really help there
