Applying Cloth Before Of After Referencing?

I'm not sure how to use the cloth. In the sense, do i create the character with cloth and then referece it into the main animation scene OR Do I reference the character without any cloth and animate, and then apply cloth to it?

any help would be great. thanks

You can actually do it either way. I create the cloth garment on the character in a default pose position. Turn the cloth solver off. Animate the character without the cloth. Return back to frame 1. Turn the solver back on and then simulate the cloth and character togther.
