Appreciating maya's renderer

I had tried out mayaMan with BMRT, oh man was this thing slowww. I compare the results with maya's native render and there were no difference. Maya's native render can compute in 1/10th of the time than BMRT/mayaMan and that quadratic filtering looks damn smooth!

Now come to think of it, maya's render is still very decient in quality.

btw. one good point of mayaMan is now you can use maya complete to treat polys as subd cage, and render the result subd with any RMAN renders, like BMRT.

Yes, that is to be expected since you are using full raytracing wich is very costly.

I must agree w/ that statement!

But hopefully not for long! If that's true what they wrote; they showed the latest Mental Ray renderer integrated in Maya at SIGGRAPH. It sounds like a dream comes true, doesn't it!

If I'd have my hands on that I would get so excited that I pee my pants!

Yes anything sucks when compared to Renderman (if you intend to render that is). And mental ray is the best raytracer around, or well its actually a hybrid eingene (but even if its raytracer is fast it raytracing is still slower than rendering).

Otherwise i still think its deecent.

mental ray is fast, it rips through the scene on softimage3D...and back it was running on 128 rams. I heard about problems handeling bigger scene...oh well I never had to do that, so I guess mental ray is idea for small studios that can't afford RMAN

yes i agree, but even mental ray getrs slow when you raytrace everything thats possible.

Splutterfish and finalrender are better than Mental Ray.

Personaly I hav't wokred with any of them inrelation to Maya so i don't know what whould work better with Maya .

So I'd be interested to hear what your reasoning is.

Rendering versus raytracing sure. Rendering is usually much faster but you cant achieve everythig with it. Thats why most raytracing eingenes are so called hybrid eingees (IE they raytrace and render, raytrace whats neccesery and renDer the rest)

Reason: rendering is a iterative task, while raytracing is by definition a recursive task.

Each time a raytracer hits a surface it will have to calculate a N number of additional rays (or until it hits is recursion limit) and calculating those rays takes as long as calculating the first ray + it now might be forced to shoot some N nuber of new rays. (it is impossible to know where theese rays are going to hit so the eintire scene has to be accecible to the raytracer)

Scan line renderers on the otherhand do not shoot rays at all. The benifits of this are the following:

• You can discard all the elements outside of your camera.
  
• The time it takes to calculate this is about the time it takes to raaytrace your first order rays. Sometimes its faster and sometimes its slower a bit depending on your scene complexity, usually a bit faster because raytracing allows for better optimisation than raytracing.
