Apprentice causes serious system-damage?

Hi Forum,

I downloaded Houdini apprentice and installed it on my PC (winXP pro). I looked at it five min. and shut down the PC. Next morning it wouldnt start (crashes in bios).

I tried Houdini on a new PC (winXP pro), but after two minutes the PC shut itself down to "prevent serious hardware-damage".

Is this standard procedure with Houdini, or am I just out of luck? I would be glad to hear if this is common, or if noone has experienced it. Cos I dont dare to try Houdini at the mo.

What you are implying is far fetched. At least, for Houdini to have caused it.

What you could check for is viruses. As with anything off the net, when downloading, check for viruses.

Also, Sounds like you may have very un-stable machines. I suggest getting your money back on the machines, or getting them replaced if it's not a virus and the problem continues.

Thank you, I agree, but do you know if there could be a compatibility issue between Houdini and certain videocards?

The first videocard was a Nvidia 32Mb, dont remember the details, the other is a 128Mb ati card (dont remember the exact name) priced at 2000$.

No, there is no way Houdini could have caused this. I've tired Houdini Apprentice on a fair number of machines and all without a problem. As was mentioned, check for viruses on your machine or other OS problems.

As far as video cards, make sure you get one with good OpenGL support. Nvidia cards are know for good drivers. The later ATI cards should work well as well...

Oh, and you don't have to spend $2000 on a video card. Just try a Gforce 2 card wth the latest drivers.

I've installed the Apprentice version on a number of machines as well, Intel, Amd and two laptops, various video cards as well. None of the installations have given me any problems.

I have had no problems at all with the Houdini Apprentice install. I works well, no crashes at all. I have installed on supported and unsupported hardware, runs great on both machines, and on a laptop. No prob.
