Assigning an image to a nurbs plane?

Is there a way to put an image file...bmp..jpg or whatever to a nurbs or poly plane????. I figured out how to insert an image plane but I can't maniputlate it like i want to. Any suggestions. Thanks

Oh man, its quite simple:
Create a nurbs plane.
Go to hypershade(hope u know how to find it)
Create>new material>lambert(just for example).
Double click on new lambert - atribute editor opens.
In this editor find color tab and push on checker icon next to it - a menu opens - choose a FILE texture from it.Assign any image(tif,jpg,iff,tga) to this file texture from your hard disc. Assign this new material to your geometry:Drag your lambert from hypershade to perspective view on your geometry with MMB(middle mouse buton).
Here you go!

let's say the image file is a reference drawing, and the the drawing is rectangular. when you apply the file to a square plane, the file assumes the proportions of the plane and is consequently squished a bit (because it should be rectangular). is there any way to prevent this from happening?

i mean, sure, you can play around with the UV scaling until it looks right, but is there any way to maintain the original image's proportions by default even if that means that a portion of the image won't appear on the plane?

A: Give the rectangular image a square border and assign it to square

B: If the image is 640x480 then make a plane and scale it to be 640 x 480 then freeze the transforms and give it a scale of .001 so that it is roughly the size you want it.
