Asteroid In The Atmosphere

Hey there guys,

This is an open question to all to throw ideas and input.

I'm trying to create an effect of an asteroid passing through the atmosphere. I also want it too look really cool. I know it can be done via fluids after many late hours tweaking the settings to get what you desire, but I want to try to create a cool effect thats less complex if possible.

Any ideas?

I might use standard particles, multi-streak and alot of sprites...and/or comp some live-action footage.

emit from obj, change emitter type to surface , n particle type to pointsor multipoints for hardware rendering or to tubes for software rendering adjust the radius n tail of tube.
