I can relate to this, your not the only one who has found out they need a different line of work to deal with your actual personal self. That isnt the one you expected.

Currently I am working on a 3D production with my local community college as an Animation Producer, and have had the burden of working with MANY Prima Donnas and know-it-alls who are not good with taking orders, and also have very sharp and disrespectful tongues when collaborating.
One of the reasons i left 3d production work. To be honest things dont change. But see I'm not a good person to speak here since i will just tell my oppinion straight and i have a feeling you couldnt take it. Most of my co workers of course respect this quite high, even our female workers.

ake the 3D route in hopes that the people I might work with would be a bit more social, vibrant and easier to work with while still thinking creatively and "outside of the box."
I'm afraid that it may be you who need to change. The more creative they get the more harder they in general become to work with. People with a vision tend to BELIEVE in them, otherwise they wouldnt be people with vision. The fact that everything appers to run smoothly is often just the actual sign it does not. In general the more friction you have the more likely your going to get things done.
However ive found that the only real cure for this problem is for you to work in a very small group. And your not doing any sort of human interface work, which im a afraid a polite person always ends up with. Thsiway the personal monomania of the persons around you becomes more natural. Having to deal with a wide warying sort of crowd only makes things worse here.

who are not good with taking orders
Im personally not very good at taking orders. But only if the orders conflict with the real interest, and if they dont i wont need orders*. You may want to reinvest time in thinking how you give out orders. Every person takes to command differently, and to be honest leading is the HARDEST thing out there. Many try it, and many will fail abyssmally. Im a quite good leader but i fail absysmally on the admin side of things.
The key to giving orders is to understand theres 8 archetypess, and the easiest archetypes to boss is NOT one to seek 3d work. As a rule of thumb the more a person brings in to the company the harder he is to boss around. This is why many studios want to take in people just to let them go after they know something. Its easy to ask somebody to do something if he needs the thing more than you.
My own solution is to find work that is isolated form other persons interests. Leaving me alone most of the time, its not that I'm antisocial because I'm not, in super social. But the thing is i dont like to mediate all the time. I mean just today it took the teams up at work 2 hours to mediate a name for a function that could have been called fooBar as well as anything else.
This all said its not all that bad. Its more about your personality. But remember just because your the boss mans NOTHING in terms of respect. Having papers saying your good mans nothing to people at the end of the day. They need to believe it too. And if you want to be the liked person who gets a nice working eviron domt becime the leader.
- one example. I was asked to make a easy user interface for a find selector, and they said no regular expressions. Well thats what i did, i just didn't do it the way they told to do it, because in essence the regexp support was free of charge. Whatever the deal would have been it would a regexp anyway. So i hid it in the options to turn it off. Do you know what the customer asked first thing? does it do regexp, the sales guy and the ceo said no. And i said yes (what the hellkind of idiots do they take take us for?). And its not like they could have gotten more money out of this or anything. They were just being silly and thinking easier is faster to code, well things why would one use something inferior, that takes longer to code.
PS: theres really no collaboration as longer as the collaborators dont respect the authority. Something not easily attained this day and age. Not least in college, where i find ave does the trick best. Thing is the new respect of young people is peer to peer. And authority does juts not in general come to play, And by the way this thinking will prevail on the long run.
