Autodesign for fun

Hi all,

I work for a small studio doing mostly corp-com type animation, flash websites, 3D and video editing...I do a little of everything. These are some models I made for fun in my spare time here at work, please enjoy.

Ive been using Maya for 2 years, and I have taught myself everything I know from reading manuals, tutorials and seeing what other artists do and use. Im getting to the point where I really need an experts advice to make my stuff look better. Ive gotten basic animation down and have done alot of experimenting with physics and particles. Alot of the paid work I do is technical, lets just say I model alot of hardrives (boring)...so this is some of my fun stuff. Realism is not my strong point, I just want them to look good.

I'm by no means an expert... but here are my thoughts.

I think it looks good what you have done so far, but ditch the checkerboard ground. Either go with something plain like a solid color... or do maybe a concrete thing. You never see giant checkerboard floors... it makes your models feel small to me. Like minature toys sitting on a checkerboard.

Second thing would be details. You've got good overall forms for your cars going, but it feels like you kind of drew the overall concept (the big lines) and connected those without doing too much of the in between detail. I'd like to see seams and mirrors and door handles and a trunk and hood that look like they could be opened.

I know you said realism isn't your strong point... and I think you've got a good thing going here... but I think the details would make it look even better.

But I really think the huge thing here is getting them off that checkerboard and onto a platform in a display room or something.

But again... I'm no expert yet either.

Thanks,
Bob

Yeah I hear ya...see this is why we do this, I never even realized they have no side mirrors...heh

I need to buy more books or something. I feel like I hit a wall when I cant do certain things like adding seams and whatnot. I never got comfertable using nurbs, and with polys I can only boolean an object so many times before it vanishes...

Ya I should get rid of the checkerfloor, i use it cuz it helps me reference how the reflections are happaning...

thanks man!
