autoPlace

Has anyone ever used 'autoPlace -um' to get the mouse cursor postion? I asked about getting the mouse position a while back and never really understood how the values that this command returns relate to the world position. I'm trying to make a script to temporarily move the scale or rotate pivot of an object to the mouse position to make scaling or rotating around any point easier. Any help or advice is appreciated.
