Does anyone know what I/O card avid use, its just that it seems it would be quite a bit cheaper to set up your own PC with raid-0 and an SDI I/O card than a standard turnkey avid system?

I think it was some kind of TARGA but not sure which.
Nothing fancy and unreachable , anyway.
Interesting!, I would love to have a system to do uncompressed video, I have DV but the quality just isn't there, unfortunately the cards are so damn expensive, and some of the best only seem to be available for macintosh (digital voodoo, pinnacle cinewave) but I guess the biggest cost would be a digital betacam player/recorder!

I believe if you are buying a digital betacam every other price should be way below that.

Digital Beta camera with a good lens is still WELL over 100 grand by the time you are done ..arn;t they ? I don;t think they have come down in price since I last priced them a few years back..I know the decks are up there as well .

yes mister...all that stuff is expensive. Avid has its own modified targa card and this one is not available from any other company. There are other digi tapessystems out there which are less expensive but not for home use as well: D9 from JVC, DVCpro50 from Panasonic... they start at about 12'000 USD.
