Batch Rename?

Is there a way to do a batch rename of all the objects and materials in a scene? I need to add a the prefix "river_" to every object and every material in a scene and I was wondering if there was a way to do it automatically or if I have to go into each one and do it individually. Thanks!

i dont know directly, but u can try selecting them, then export to a file. then import them again, using the string River or making the filename river.

Yea you could do that but there might be some issues with certain types of links .. you'll notice that the import dialogue does not reccomend doing this on import. They prefer you use namespaces.

There may be an existing mel script for this but otherwise it should easy to write a script for it.. I will try to write this if I have a minute or two today.

here's how you rename all geometry in your scene.

CODE
select -r listTransforms -geometry;

$name = "river_";
for($n in ls -l -sl){

select $n;

$N=ls -sl;

rename $n ($name+$N[0]);

}

There is and its built in, tough gmasks way works too. In the uppermost right corner theres a type in box. It has several modes (2 typed trasltes on quicke slection set retriever and quick rename) you can change the mode with the button in fornt of it. Anyway theres quick rename feature there When you select something and type a name there maya renames each and every one to thet name plus running number

I don't know if the quick rename let's you prepend a new name to the old name

No not really, but that very quickly amended, just replace the name of your proc with renameSelectionList and make sure it inputs one string what to base name with and you can have it replacing in whatever you want. (see its more usfull to make this widget work like you want isntead of making a new one)

My personal version uses substitute if the syntax is written in /regexp/subst/ form wich allows pretty much for ANY possible change easily (prepend, append, even insertting in middle/swapping terms for jodaspeak conversion if i wish).
