Batch Render Issues 196 MB error Cannot Write File

I've run into a bit of a hassle with my renders recently... only started happening in the last four scenes or so. This is either a single problem that manifests in two ways, or it's two seperate, but equally frustrating problems...

With Maya open, Batch Renders will render through to the last frame, however random frames throughout the sequence wil render incorrectly, and I must locate them in Finder and render them out one at a time to complete the sequence...

If I render through a Maya Terminal Shell, it will render a number of frames then, instead of crashing, it  continues running the script, but instead of creating a file, it kicks this out... for every frame remaining in the sequence...

RC   0.2    196 MB error  081014: cannot write file /Volumes/Data/filename.0001.tif

DISP 0.2    172 MB error  211010: failed to create 128-byte stub image /Volumes/Data/filename.0002.tif: Invalid argument

I suspect that maybe since it's rendering to an external drive there may be a connection issue that starts the error off, so I'm trying this next batch writing to a local drive... Hope this solves it, but at the same time I hope it's something else, because my local drive space is limited...
