Batch Render With Transpareny Background

Hi there guys

Im from Australia, and im fairly new to maya 2008

I have used it for about 10 weeks and i have a basic knowledge of most aspects of maya, modelling, rendering, lighting etc, and simple keyframe animation.

My question is;

Is there a way to batch render out simple animations that have a transparent background.
i.e. so the rendered animation sequence only contains the animated object

The reason i want to do this is so i can import these animations into flash for use in a website i am making

And help would be greatly appreciated

yes of course it does this by default.. if you create a sphere and hit render it will have a transparent background

doesnt the default background render out as black

i dont want to have to cut around each frame in photoshop

I think you are missing something obvious.. what format are you saving the files as??

Most of the typical formats and defaults in Maya are geared towards images with alphas. A black background is by default an image that probably has an alpha channel in Maya.

so what exactly do i have to do to render out with a transparent background

choose tga file format and then....

essentially what i am asking is

Is there a simple way to render out the object(s) only
and hence have a transparent background on the rendered frame/frame sequence (animation)

without going into photoshop and doing all this "alpha" chanel maniputation in there?

choose targa and make sure alpha is checked in the render settings which it is by default.

I guess I'm wondering if your scene has a background and you are trying to render an object minus the background?

with your question regarding the background

my scene has for example just a 3d object animation which i want to use for example as a button on a web site

hence, there is no background or "floor"

just sits in black space when rendered out

and i want to have that black space become transparent space.

so checking the alpha box on render settings will make this black transparent?

I think the issue here is that you are expecting the image to load in photoshop with the background allready deleted.

I just did a test and if you save a PSD file it will load in PS with the background deleted allready.

rendering out with a PNG automatically brings into photoshop with a transparent (checkered) background

if not using PNG's how do you remove the alpha channel once in photoshop

i.e. if a TGA or PSD fild format
the image still comes in with a blk background

when i go to channels i can see the R,G,B and Alpha channel, yet how do i remove this?

Well they tried to implement this kind of auto alpha deletion in photoshop. However thing is the alpha channel CAN be used to other things han just tarsparency. So they got whaked on the head, bacuse many had other uses for this, so they ended deleting the feature (victory for pro's and los for newbies). PNG defines it as alpha only as for other formats its justa a custom channel. The same happens in photoshop too if you export a image as tiff with alpha and you get it back as no alpha. Anyway what your asking is easy.

unfreeze background, load alpha as selection, invert it and hit delete, deselect and run matting remove black matte. (to get premult straight)
