Best and fastest render hardware?

I am fairly new to this board and I like some opinions about what hardware to buy. Yes, I am going to buy a new system:). I want to put the accent of new machine on graphix prog. like 3dstudiomax, Maya, Bryce,Rhino and get the best rendertime for high quality raytracing and stuff.

Any one of you know special hardware I have to look out for ? Pentium or AMD system
And what's most important to make fast renders ?
I had composed a AMD 1400/266 , 40gig ibm 7200rpm, 512 DDR memory, Abit k7 DDR mainboard, Ati 64mb vivo videocard, but if you know something better to look out for, please let me know about it and I take it in consideration.

Looks allright, stay away from intel if you want fast rendertimes; Athlon 1400 is about 3 times as fast in Maxrendering as an P4 1.7ghz. Also consider buying a geforce2 board, with the so called "softquadro" hack, turn it into a quadro, and 3D-apps simply FLY...

Yes, I thought about Geforce2 (3 is too expensive) and I heard it was faster in 3d, but I heard about this Ati being much more quality colour/video/dvd etc and less faster, but still ok for 3d. So that's the though choice I have to make > quality image and slower or faster with less quality image/screen etc.

I'm pretty happy with my Geforce 3 card... I got mine for around $300 which isn't that expensive. Also you mention best hardware for rendering .. your video card has no bearing on how fast the computer renders in software. I also have a Dual AthlonMP and it kicks butt.

haha yea I went nuts and got one of those Gloria DCC cards..750 bucks ..urg
but , it handles lights nicely when working shaded, also pure wireframes seem to update faster..jsut a little.
Only thing different I can find in performace from a freinds g3.
But when i was using my g2 with maya 4..I had issues with display of the hyeprshae and other odditys.
