Best Import Option To Shake From Sd Video

Hi guys, did a search but couldn't find what I was after.
Can you tell me the best way to get some DVC Pro vision into Shake (file wise)? Should I go
through final cut to make it Quicktime, or will shake accept it as an .AVI or uncompressed?

As you can tell I am new to Shake, but where I come from you learn a different App. for each different job.

Shake reads any movie files that quicktime can read. It only has issues with hdv and mpeg.

Personally I write everything to sequential images iff/sgi files because they load faster.

sorry for side tracking this thread, i remember reading something about shake having troubles with HDV, but strangely enough i just did some tests a few days ago and it had no problems whatsoever loading hdv qt files from a sony captured with fcp... am i missing something here?

as for your DVCPRO footage.. how was it captured? what's your final outut format? on what system?
i agree that an image sequence is the way to go for high end work, but sometimes you can get some fottage enhancements if you load the native qt file into shake (like, if you mark HDV footage as 1440x1080 in QT and then have shake resizing it to 1920x1080)

The problem with HDV is that adds an mpeg like compression scheme where it has P frames(Predictive). So where it might load fine, there are many possiblilities of it having issues while you work. The frames are essentially generated on the fly and could change depeding the machine you are on.

Thanks guys, the footage will be captured with FCHD, its PAL DVCpro stuff for Channel 7 (OZ TV station). I was just curious what SHAKE would accept vision wise, just in case someone gave me a DVD or tape of vision in the future, and if I would have to use final cut for the capture each time....

Off topic... Can you tell me if Shake is the best option for high end fx for video? I know its big for film, but I honestly think I will mainly be doing broadcast stuff for TV stations and TV adds (although I would like to do high end stuff, not small time fx). I love the motion tracking and warping stuff etc. so that was the main reason I was looking at Shake.

I want to do stuff that isn't common and easy to do, I want stations to come to me because not many others can do this stuff. BTW I only have a MAC and don't want to get another PC (G5 dual 2gig).

i'm not sure exactly what this "vision" thing is, the only format of DVCPRO i know about is tape (which you would capture over firewire in fcp) or now P2 (which you can do by a special reader or a card slot).
once it's on the computer, it's a normal quicktime file that you can import to shake without problems.
(btw, i do hope that you'll get DVCPRO50 or DVCPRO HD)

as for shake being the "best" for TV work:
depends a lot on what you want to do, but i actually doubt that you can do everything in a single package. you probably want to pick up a copy of after effects or motion as well, and at some point you're looking at some 3D as well.

no offence, but from your question it seems that you're just starting up, so it might take quite some time (and money) until you can offer stuff that not many others can.
