It seems to me that the article showed that there ISN'T a single winner accross the board. The best card depends not just on the specific application, but on what your focus is within that application. Different cards excel in different catagories. Also, with the radical difference in prices, it's hard not to take cost into consideration, which can take some of the "bang" out of the performace differences.

i wonder why they didnt put the fireGL4 in there, i know its basicly a GL2, but its clocked higher and has more ram, so youd think itd perform differently.

The omission of the DCC was pretty big but overall it was a great article. They will be doing a follow-up with the DCC and ATI FireGL 8800 that should be very good.

With out the question, FireGl 4 is the best overall performer! OpenGL close to the one on wildcat5110, and full directX and direct3D support makes it simply the best (openGL acceleration actually beets Wildcat in 3D Max and directX is needed for video editing)

What is the general consensus on the Radeon 8500 vs QuadroDCC and Quadro2Pro?

Okay, quite confusing reading all these reviews because there are soooo many Nvidia cards. Basically though, if I get a GeForce ti500 and do the softquadro (is this hard or dangerous to the card) I will get the fastest chipset with the best OpenGL features??? I am going to be using Combustion (compositing) and 3DMax, no games.

I see for instance at AcesHardware that the Quadro2Pro (Gloria III sheesh) consistently (mostly) beats out the GeForce 3 with the same basic chipset. So the enabled features obviously give the Q2P the lead.

Does this mean if I enable the GeForce3 ti500 with Quadro2Pro or DCC features I will outperform the Q2Pro?

And, is it possible to make it a Quadro2Pro DCC, since it appears the DCC has optimizations for Discreet products but is based on slower chipset.

This is a big confusing issue with Elsa's card names
The Gloria card was based on one of the older workstation chipset cards. The Gloria 2 was based on nVidia's first quadro based chip (based on the Geforce 256 core). The Gloria III came in several flavors; Quadro2, Quadro2MX, Quadro2 MXR, and I think Quadro2 Pro. These were all based on the GeForce2 GTS core. The Gloria DCC is the card based on the Geforce3 core; which was not reviewed in this article. For what I'm doing a softquadro'd Gloria DCC is performing most excellently.

Thanks for the reply. I was leaning between the GeForce ti500 softquadro'd to a DCC. Is this as good as I can get performance wise?

Also, the GeForce 3 and Radeon 8500 seem to be neck and neck. Is it safe to assume than the a softquadro'd GeForce3 ti500 would outperform both the Radeon 8500 AND the standard Quadro DCC (which is based on GeForce3, not GeForce 3 ti500).

yea.. that article is bunk.. the Gloria 3 was out long ago and is a mes with Maya I thought..
the DCC is a great card. it wasn;t in he line up. So this is old news .

If one were to SoftQuadro the GeForce ti500, how would one get the Elsa Drivers which accelerate 3DMax and such?

Also, could one overclock the ti500?

I don't know if maxtreme will work with softquadro; it might; only one way to find out. as far as overclocking; you can overclock the ti500; or you can be like my friend mike; who bought the ti200 and overclocked it to ti500 specs. Miliage may vary on overclocking though; you might get a yeild that'll go 10-20mhz over the default clock speed; or you might get one that can only go 5mhz over.

Maybe I'm confused, but why would you need to "softquadro" a Gloria DCC?

There doesn't seem to be any benefit in this since the DCC is already "quadro'ed"

I think,.,.all a softquadro does is overclock the CPU on the card? no?
So overclocking a fast card wikll only increase it , as long as you keep it cool.. am I off base?

SoftQuadro turns a GF3 into a DCC. A DCC doesn't need it. It also turns GF2s into Quadro2 Pro or MXR.

SoftQuadro is part of RivaTuner. RivaTuner does have overclocking capabilities but you have to choose to use them.

Well, SoftQuadro is a subset of RivaTuner. SoftQuadro only deals with the Geforce/Quadro ID part of it. The overclocking utility is another subset of RivaTuner. These (overclocking and SoftQuadro) can be used independently or together.

I haven't tried it myself but I'm pretty sure I've read that Maxtreme will work with SoftQuadro-ed cards.

I can over-clock my DCC just using the Detonator drivers. I don't have any softquadro or rivatuner patches installed and I get the same or better performance as anybody else........

So is there ANY difference at all between softquadro'd geforce 2/3 and real quadro2pro/quadrodcc other than the price? I ask because I have a real quadro2pro in my comp and if this softquadro is for real then i would like to try and sell my card and get a geforce3 ti500. Also, if this is the case, is there any difference between a Dell OEM quadro and a retail one(I have the Dell one)? And how much can i get for a 6 month old quadro on Ebay? I just looked and saw a couple listed at 400 but they had no bids on them. I just want to get enough for it to buy the ti500 plus a little extra to cover the hassle of switching cards(who am i kidding, with this new tool-free case nothing is really a hassle:).
