Why is it if you want to select a component (vert, face, edge) in 3d view and there happens to be another one lined up but farther away in space, Maya ALWAYS selects the component farthest from the camera? I'm sure this is a hopeless request, but I'd like that to be fixed.
Its either a bug in how your display card works, (yes shody hardware works very badly in maya. i can understand this trying to support all hardware in teh world is hard you need all theese switches to flick options off for users who have crappy cards. At our comppany we do this. The result si that it dont work much better for crappy cards but atleast they can turn the annoyances off)
Or you have a selection priority in place.
And no it dont happen to me.

One thing (possibly the only thing) I like about lightwave is in shaded view, you cannot select what you cannot see.
Shaded selection has been added in 2009 (works only for polys and subidivison surfaces tough), doubleclick on the select tool the options up on the top of the options. Do you ever read release notes?*
*You should even for future versions of what your using just in case they have fixed that issue you have had for ages.

At least if we can't have that, could we make Maya select what's closest to camera when there is doubt about what you are trying to select?
It does it just don't work on all display cards. (just be sure you have the sorting option on) Its also possible that you have intpretted the isometric vireews as being upside down.
In other words i have a quadro 3700 and a quadro 4800 to test and they both do this right, as far as i see the low end nvidia on my girlfiends computer does the same on the newest ple. Tough granted they DID have problem with this in maya 7.0
Now wish they would support a wider range of graphics cards... They wont, trust me on this supportuing just 18 cards is enough of work for a software that needs some more bleeding gpu capabilities. As the complain would be the same that card works better than this card, well not much autodesk can do about that. Sure the list of cards is half show but there is some significant difference
