Black Screen On Render When Any Lighting Applied

Hi,

Total noob here, I have tried looking into this on other forums but can't find anything. This place looks great so I hope someone can help!

When I just draw any simple shape, I can press render (on maya's render and mental ray) and I will see the simple object rendered.

But if I try to add any kind of lighting to it (spot light, ambient light etc) the render will come out as a black screen.

The really wierd thing is that I still have the personal learning edition installed, and if I try the same process on this the render comes out fine.

Anyone have a clue what is going on?

Windows XP, my graphics card is a BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC 128MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI PCI-E

Hi

1 create a sphere

and create a point light

then go to windowsmenu then go to relationship ediotrs

then glo for light linking then take light centric

now u will get a winow there u can see point light and spehre

then just click point light and click spehere

then try to render

When no light is present, Maya will give you a standard light, but when you add a single light, the default lighting shuts down, leaving you with only the light you added. Make sure your light is facing towards your scene. You may use the "7" key to activate a preview light when working in shaded mode (press "5" or "6" for those two modes) to give you an idea where your light is shining. Also select a light and use Panels->Look through selected to take a peek through your selected light.

Regarding PLE, I add just a spotlight and the render shows it. But when I do the identical thing in the full version of Maya it comes out as a black sceen.

try checking the camera attributes. make sure that they are renderable, sometimes maya forgets to do that. also, check to see that the object itself is rendering (check the alpha channel of the image), if the object is there but is black it could also be your light falloff, intensity, or because it's tuesday.

kurianos3d, I tried what you have explained.

It works, but only when 'Maya Hardware' is selected in the globals.
'Maya Software' and 'MentalRay' just show a black screen.

If I try this in the Personal Learning Edition - all of the Settings ('Maya Hardware', 'Maya Software' & 'MentalRay') render properly showing the correct lights.

Seems like something is wrong with the full version of Maya - can anybody think what it could be and how it could be fixed?

Do you have raytraced shadows on? IF so turn them off and see if there still is no image.

Also try assigning a clean fersh materioial to everything

Raytracing is off.

I tried rendering it with the object selected last night and it seemed to work.
I didn't think you had to select the object for the render to work...???

You dont, but chek one menu item out: If your render view -> render -> Render Selected Objects Only is chekked the problem is there. Unchek it (the option is persistent so once you turn it on it STAYS on till you say something else).
